History

Ovidius University Press was set up in 1990, on the foundations of an old printing workshop dating back to 1969.

Over the years, its name and logo appeared on hundreds of printed volumes, primarily academic works, singling it out as one of the most representative publishing houses in Dobruja and making important contributions to “Ovidius” University’s escalating reputation.

Through Ovidius University Press, the university was the main organiser of the “Ovidius” International Book Salon (whose six editions took place between 2003 and 2008). Consistently attended by over 100 publishing houses and cultural institutions, the Salon rapidly entered the national circuit of such events. Distinguished guests, including some key representatives of Romanian culture such as Sorin Alexandrescu, Mihai Şora, Octavian Paler and many others, visited the stalls set up by the various publishing houses, thus contributing to the event’s significance and prestige. The Salon has benefited from a close and constant collaboration with the Writers’ Union of Romania, present every autumn in Constanţa together with great international and local writers including Jorge Semprún, Alain Robbe-Grillet, António Lobo Antunes, Ismail Kadaré, Ricardo Montserrat, Paolo Ruffilli, Mimmo Morina, Amos Oz, Adam Puslojić, Tomas Salamun, Jonathan Coe, Cengiz Bektaş, Radomir Andric, Alan Brownjohn, Charles Carrère, Edward Foster, Nicolae Breban, Nicolae Manolescu, Augustin Buzura, George Bălăiţă, Eugen Uricaru, Ilie Constantin, Grigore Vieru, Alexandru Ştefănescu. Each edition culminated in the publication of volumes comprising the lectures and speeches given by the literary creators, artists and scientists in attendance, which further contributed to its originality and uniqueness.

Likewise, from 2000 onwards, Ovidius University Press was a constant presence at the “Tomis Colloquia” organised by the Writers’ Union of Romania and the “Tomis” Journal, launching numerous books and being awarded Certificates of Excellence for its steadfast promotion of valuable members of Constanţa’s scientific community.

Over the years, prestigious representatives of Romanian and international academia have crossed paths with the local publishing house, having one or more books or university textbooks added to its collections or contributing fundamental works to special edition volumes.

Many of the texts printed, which stood out in terms of both scientific importance and outstanding graphic quality, were awarded prizes at the Book Fairs and Salons organised in Bucureşti, Iaşi, Cluj-Napoca, Oradea, Constanţa.

In recognition of the complex publishing activity, for promoting the written word and supporting national and international scientific events, Ovidius University Press Publishing House received over 100 awards of excellence, diplomas, distinctions, medals at the Book Fairs organized in Brasov, Bucharest, Cluj- Napoca, Oradea, Constanta, Iasi, Chisinau, Leipzig, Brest.

Between 2006 and 2011, Ovidius University Press was accredited by CNCSIS. In 2011, Ovidius University Press was recognized by the CNCS and rated as a C category publishing house within the field of Philology.
